About Dapsone Diaminodiphenylsulfone Tablets

What is Dapsone?
Dapsone is an anti-infective type of medication that fights bacteria. The medication works by stopping the growth of bacteria to decrease inflammation. It is mainly prescribed in the treatment of leprosy, the rare disease caused by a type of bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae. Some patients might also use the tablets to treat a certain type of skin disorder called dermatitis herpetiformis, an itchy blistering rash associated with coeliac disease. The drug can be used to treat bacterial infections but cannot be used to treat viral infections such as the flu or common cold.

How is Dapsone used?
Dapsone is usually taken orally once per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patients condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the treatment can cause the infection to return and the bacteria to become harder to treat.

Adverse effects
Patients using Dapsone may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Upset stomach
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Loss of appetite
